Dhamma Bodhi, meaning ‘Enlightenment of Dhamma’, is located in Bodhgaya in South
Bihar, where the Buddha attained enlightenment. Bodhi means enlightenment. The Maha
Bodhi Temple commemorates the Buddha’s enlightenment, and its grounds contain the
Bodhi Tree. This temple can be seen from Dhamma Bodhi. The 12-acre Centre is near
Magadh University. Goenkaji has conducted many Vipassana courses in Bodhgaya, the first
of these as early as 1970. However, the first course on the Centre was held in November
1995 in which sixty-five students participated.
Presently, Dhamma Bodhi is under renovation and courses will recommence after
construction is over in another six months. A Dhamma Hall to seat 100 students is being
built, as a well as a Pagoda with 75 to 80 cells. 24 additional rooms for male and female
students are also being built. In winter, over 50 percent of students to Dhamma Bodhi come
from outside India.
