Dhamma Puri, meaning ‘Town of Dhamma’, is the first Vipassana Centre to be
established in Northeast India. Located in a small village called Machmara, on the bank of
the river Machamara, the Centre is surrounded by green natural beauty. It is about 10
km from Pecharthal Railway station and 150 km from Agartala. Transport and
communication to Dhammapuri are available, including bus, taxi, auto and other means of
transport.

Ten-day courses were first started by holding two gypsy camps at Jetavan Buddha Vihara.
After completing the courses one grateful student donated a small plot of land measuring
0.60 acres. On this land, a Dhamma hall was established in Feb 2004, with capacity of 72
meditators. Later, more land was purchased and the total land area is now 3.36 acres.
Dormitory-type residences can accommodate 40 males and 30 female students.
Segregated dining halls are available. The Centre has bamboo and thatch roofed
structures.
